Complementing the per—layer effects is a dual-bus system comprising echo, reverb, chorus, vocoder, tremolo and two compressors. So if having all the appeal of a desktop synth in your iPad, er, app-eals sorry! With six insert slots drawing on a roster of 11 effects, SynthMaster One has plenty of signal-processing and polishing scope. Separate to the wavetables, the oscillator Waveforms menu houses more than 150 single-cycle waves drawing on the same sources as the waveforms - a diverse wealth of static tonal starting points. Definite bread and butter synth, and I can see getting a lot of miles out of it. Each can run freely or be synced to the host clock, and if you switch to step or glide mode, the waveforms can be user—sculpted — a great source of complex rhythms. Criticism of gear or the people that buy it based on your opinion of its cost is not. Naturally, this is fab for designing organ patches, but given that each wave has the equivalent choices to a Basic oscillator, Additive is a far more powerful source than it appears.
Polyphony mode There are 3 configurations — poly, mono and legato. I can simple resume to SynthMaster One is a great quality for a small price! You can choose a variety of presets and parameters for each. The filters can be configured in series or in parallel, with a third option, split, on hand for individual oscillator processing. Arguably, the only missing type is some kind of formant filter. All these processes can be applied to Wavescanning, Additive and Basic oscillator types. Please try and avoid the rookie mistake I made almost immediately, which was to try an alternative skin without first downloading the manual. Watch our videos, listen to the audio demos and you'll see how easy it is to design sounds with this synth.
For the next bite of classic synthesis, the Wavescanning oscillator is a simplified slant on the format. The sound quality is excellent, for instance there are a range of basses from classic analogue to 80s sounds to modern DnB sounds. Huge library of well-organized factory presets. They already made a lot of banks for SynthMaster 2, so of course, the quality is there! They can also be assigned in the modulation matrix. The digital filters feature a hard limiter that contains excessive resonance.
We have a zero tolerance policy for that sort of thing and it is strictly enforced. So oscillators and modulators are bottom left; envelopes, bottom right; filters, top right; arpeggiator and effects top left; and finally a Matrix area to the right. Dedicated knobs for attack, phase, sample-and-hold, and adding noise are available on both, and of course, there is an array of tempo-syncing amenities, as well. This gives a range of lowpass, highpass. You can draw notes in by hand or activate Record mode and play them in step by step, either at their played velocities or fixed at 127. Using the menu above, one of 13 waveshaping algorithms is loaded into the oscillator, directly processing its raw output with a range of filtering, syncing and waveform warping and distortion treatments.
The modulation tools cover the basics nicely, with a few thoughtful touches that add to their range. On Windows, it runs as a standalone application as well. The complexity of the synth engine can therefore be hidden away, reduced to the most important parameters needed for live interaction and mapped to your favourite hardware controller. The raw output of each oscillator can also be shaped using one of 16 algorithms in four categories — spectral, bend, sync and other. SynthMaster One comes with a rich wavetable library and you can extend that by placing wavetables under the Waveforms folder of SynthMaster One. The filters shape the sound really well and you can get some really nice movement in the sound modulating the filter cutoff and resonance settings for instance. Unlike SynthMaster where you can sequence up to 16 waveforms to create a wavetable, you can import wave files that contain wavetables into SynthMaster One and use them in your projects.
If Tone can change to Index for wavetables, surely Phase could be renamed appropriately to the selected algorithm. They use exactly the same algorithms and are designed to run in tandem, so presets are interchangeable between the two as are wavetables and waveforms. You can click on modules to activate them, decide if the layer should be polyphonic, whether you need both oscillators, how the filters are arranged and so on. This is also a great synth to try if you are new to synthesis as it is very easy to get around and will offer a deeper amount of creative controllability upon getting more familiar with it. Going further, multiple samples can be imported too, once converted to. Each of the 16 steps of the arpeggiator has its own Velocity, Note Number, Note Length, Slide and Hold parameters. Of course, what all of these options mean is masses of sonic potential, and there are 20+ instrument types keys, bass, arpeggios, synths, etc and then these are broken down by style, attribute, author and bank into sounds.
An impressive but shy beast, the modulation matrix spreads its content over eight pages, each with eight entries. While Tone always controls filter frequency, Shape operates different parameters depending on the algorithm - but with no contextual naming, it can be pretty confusing. What it lacks in features compared to Serum, I would say it makes up for in ease of use. That aside, the waveshaping section is incredibly useful for sharpening up, skewing and enriching those raw shapes. The presets cover a wide range of arps, sequences, synths, leads, basses and pads. Criticism of gear based on its sound, features, etc is ok. I will definitely be getting it! The Verdict Synthmaster One is not just a cut down version of its bigger brother Synthmaster.
Despite a few controls having been trimmed off along the way, they still make for an impressive and colourful bunch. The 2D varieties generate two simultaneous outputs — X and Y — that are just the job for mixing Vector oscillator levels. Please feel free to ask any questions about the plugin. This means that you can create rhythmic arpeggios and polyphonic sequences. You can choose filters to be in series, parallel or split, and here you get into the detail of each.
While this approach keeps the panel compact, it condemns you to an eternal click—fest with no hope of a complete picture of any patch — except in your head. When you combine all of these features with excellent value for money Synthmaster One is a very capable synth offering extensive sound creation options suitable for a wide range of styles. Each of its two oscillators includes a dedicated sub-oscillator that goes far beyond the usual fare. Finally, Chord mode plays back the held chord, as opposed to its constituent notes, in a rhythmic sequence - just the thing for big trancegate-style pads. Also at the far right, you can make adjustments to various settings including changing the skin.
SynthMaster One has a large factory bank with 500 presets by these sound designers: Arksun, Aiyn Zahev, Bulent Biyikoglu, Gercek Dorman, Nori Ubukata, Rob Lee, Ufuk Kevser, Vorpal Sound and Xenos Soundworks. The two oscillators each offer the usual analogue waveshapes - Sine, Triangle, Square, Sawtooth and Pulse - but, really, SynthMaster One is all about more elaborate digital waveforms and wavetables. A number of waveforms are sampled from a range of classic and vintage hardware synths providing a wealth of alternatives to regular analogue shapes. These features definitely give SynthMaster One more of a big-room feel and a distinctive sound. . Synthmaster is dual layer, with each one playing in Poly, Mono or Legato modes.
